Imagine stumbling upon an object from beyond our solar system that behaves nothing like the comets we're familiar with—defying gravity, changing colors, and now, sprouting jets like a sci-fi spaceship. That's the mind-bending mystery of 3I/ATLAS, the third interstellar interloper ever spotted, after 1I/Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov. Discovered back in July 2025, this enigmatic visitor has got scientists scratching their heads and everyday folks buzzing with excitement. Labeled a comet? Sure, but its quirky trajectory, color shifts, and post-perihelion antics on October 29 have only fueled wild speculations. But here's where it gets controversial... could this be more than just a natural space rock?
Fueling the online frenzy, Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb has just dropped a bombshell in his latest Medium post, analyzing fresh images of 3I/ATLAS that reveal plumes of jets emanating from it. These aren't just any jets—they're a complex network that's got experts puzzled.
The images, released by astronomers Michael Jäger, G. Rhemann, and E. Prosperi on November 8, 2025, were captured when the object was 29 degrees from the Sun. At that moment, 3I/ATLAS shone brightly at magnitude 9.1 and hovered 7-10 degrees above the horizon. The team described it as featuring 'a 5' coma and 4-5 tails or jets: 400" pa 0, 500" pa 316, 900" pa 295, 430" pa 278 and a counter-tail 200" pa 109.' For beginners in astronomy, think of this as a hazy halo around the comet (the coma) with multiple streamers or jets pointing in different directions, measured in position angles—essentially, angles from a reference point to show their orientation relative to the Sun.
Commenting on these visuals, Professor Loeb pointed out: 'The images show at least 7 distinct jets, some of which are anti-tails in the sunward direction.' He elaborated that with so many jets firing in various directions, the observed non-gravitational acceleration of 3I/ATLAS—where it speeds up beyond what gravity alone would explain—requires ejecting way more than 10-20% of its original mass near perihelion. Only a small portion of that ejected material would carry extra momentum in one favored direction.
To break it down for newcomers: In a typical comet, jets are like mini-rockets powered by sublimating ice (turning from solid to gas), pushing the comet along. But if this is a natural comet, the massive amount of mass loss to create that acceleration seems improbable. It would mean the debris cloud around it accounts for a huge chunk of its starting mass. And this is the part most people miss... technological thrusters could achieve the same boost using far less mass expelled at higher velocities, like how a spacecraft's engines give it a nudge without wasting fuel inefficiently.
In his blog, Loeb poses a tantalizing question about these jets: Are they the result of natural pockets of ice on a comet's surface, or are they deliberate thrusters guiding an alien spacecraft? As he puts it, 'We do not know.' This notion of extraterrestrial technology isn't new—Avi Loeb has been vocal about the possibility of alien probes visiting our system, sparking heated debates. Do you think we're seeing evidence of intelligent design from another world, or is this just overactive imagination? It's a divisive topic: some call it groundbreaking science, others dismiss it as fringe theory. But what if the truth lies somewhere in between?
